How i chose my business name “Bokeh Photography By Bree”

Choosing a business name is hard, its like trying to find just a few words to explain a whole story. Where do you even start? Do you use your own name? Do you use your full name, what if you are about to get married in a few months of opening your business? Do you use your new name? Its so hard and there are so many things to consider.

So I thought I would share how and why we came to be “Bokeh Photography by Bree”.

Firstly I decided I wanted to focus on Newborn and Maternity Photography in Penrith, I wanted to set up to be able to reach out to my local community and be able to offer a high standard of quality service for new babies to my friends and family and their friends and family.. In saying this, I knew that I had my “where” very clearly set out.

Secondly I had to decide what “main” word I wanted to use – Photography, Images or Photos. What sounds soft enough to work with newborn babies and families? If I go with Photography (which I liked the most (being a long word)) I needed a short “name” In front of that as I didn’t want it to be a mouthful to say.. (again so much to think about..)

So I sat down and started thinking about my focus. This being “Newborn and Maternity photography in Penrith” I wanted it to sound beautiful enough for a Muma to be, yet sweet enough for a newborn. As I am attracting new mums to be and their new babies, this was really important to me.

Thirdly I didn’t want my name to be the main “focus” so I decided I wanted it to be “something” Photography by Bree, now it was to find what that “something” was.

I searched Newborn and Maternity Photography in Penrith to look for inspiration, I ended up getting distracted looking at all the amazing images of precious babies. Than my sister gave me the idea to google “photography vocabulary”, so I did. Not expecting to find anything I liked as I know how fussy I am. Then boom “Bokeh” was 3rd on the list and I was initially drawn to the name, drawn to the image underneath it and drawn to the meaning behind it.

I am a real “letter” person. I love B’s, K’s, M’s and Y’s, so when I found Bokeh I initially loved the way that it looked. I loved that the 1st, 3rd and 5th letter were high and the 2nd and 4th were low.

So then I said “Bokeh Photography by Bree” about a thousand times that day, I wrote it down, I pretend answered the phone and just kept saying it to make sure I loved it as much as I did the moment I first read it. And I absolutely did, I thought it was soft and perfect.

Bokeh is said “Bow – kay”.  Bokeh is the blur in a photo or an orb in a photo – so to me, this represents the imperfections in life that make our days pretty perfect. I am also abit “woo woo” so I love that the blur also represents the orbs in our photos. I enjoy knowing these beautiful people are still around to walk our journey with us.

I am aware a lot of people may not be able to say Bokeh initially whilst reading it for the first time but so much thought went into it that I am okay explaining my story time and time again.

So when I am in my studio specialising in Newborn and Maternity Photography in Penrith, I wear my business name with pride knowing that every single session I do I am sharing in someone’s new journey, extremely passionate about making a difference in my community, my new home.

Check out some of my beautiful babies that I have had the pleasure of photographing so far under Bokeh Photography by Bree in my blogs above. I love what I do each day and i hope you can see the passion I share with the families I meet.
